Watashi's World

 As my first year in University is about to come to a close. I can honestly say I have learned a lot. Which is why I think this anime hit home for me. 

A Non-Traditional Story

Masaaki Yuasa's anime "The Tatami Galaxy," which is based on the novel by Tomihiko Morimi, has a distinctive and non-linear narrative structure. A college student named "Watashi" (which translates to "I" in Japanese) who feels stuck in a loop of regret and wasted opportunities serves as the story's anonymous protagonist. Watashi makes decisions in the parallel universes he lives in, and each episode depicts a new reality to highlight the effects of his decisions. The show deftly investigates themes of destiny, free will, and the never-ending pursuit of happiness.

The Magical Dorm Room

Tatami mats, vivid characters, and limitless possibilities characterise the shared dormitory room, which serves as the series' central setting. It is the centre of all of Watashi's adventures, both humorous and meaningful. Here, he meets Ozu (his cunning frenemy) and Akashi (his campus crush). Watashi spends a lot of his time in his room recalling old memories, learning from his senpai (upperclassman) Higoshi and sometimes drowning his sorrows with Japanese castella cake. His dorm room is the epicentre of his college experience and is where he grows most as a person.

For the Rose-Coloured Campus Life: A Mission

Watashi's ultimate objective is to achieve a "rose-coloured campus life," an idea that eludes him time and time again. He thinks that choosing the right club, being socially popular, and having a successful college career are the keys to happiness. Which is a notion that I used to have as well. But his obsessive pursuit frequently results in humorous mishaps and reflective moments that make him rethink his assumptions. He later realises that it is not the number of friends he has, but the quality is what matters.

Brilliant visuals and symbolism

Director Masaaki Yuasa's "The Tatami Galaxy" is notable for its visually appealing animation technique. I like the distinctive character designs and fantastical graphics which enhance the series' dreamlike feel and make it a visual feast. Symbolism, like the recurrent depiction of a secret fortune teller, gives the story depth and encourages viewers to decipher its implications.

A Self-Discovery Lesson

"The Tatami Galaxy" is an emotional lesson in self-discovery and the value of appreciating the present moment as Watashi negotiates the complexities of his multiple lives. Watashi learns to embrace the people that are already in his life rather than chasing a superficial dream. The show invites viewers to consider their own life decisions and the quest for happiness through its bizarre characters, philosophical undertones, and clever storytelling.
